Program Structure

The Certificate in Spiritual Direction (CSD) is a non-credit, continuing education program designed to train participants in the art of spiritual accompaniment and guidance. Offered through a partnership between the Institute for Ministerial Wholeness and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, this program provides a structured yet deeply personal journey into the practice of spiritual direction.

Cohort-Based Learning

 

Participants will engage in a supportive learning community, walking together through the process of formation and training. The cohort model fosters accountability, shared wisdom, and deep relationships that enhance both personal and ministerial growth.

 

Three-Year Program Format

 

  • Nine intensive three-day sessions (Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday morning) held in October, March, and June over three years.

  • Integrated theological, biblical, and practical training in spiritual direction.

  • Supervised practicum experience to develop hands-on skills in guiding others.

  • Completion certificate awarded upon fulfilling all program requirements.

  • When does the program start?
    The next cohort will begin in October 2025. Enrollment for the first course will open in May 2025.
  • What is the format of the program?
    The program follows a hybrid learning model, combining online coursework with periodic in-person sessions. This structure allows for flexible learning while maintaining the relational aspect of spiritual direction training.
  • What is the cost of the program?
    Each course costs $275, making the total certificate program $2,475 (over three years).
  • Will I receive academic credit for this program?
    The courses may be eligible for continuing education units (CEUs), but they are not currently part of a degree program. However, following the completion of the certificate program, AGTS will grant 6 hours of graduate school credit that can be applied to a masters degree (MA) program at AGTS.
  • What is the cohort model, and why is it used?
    The cohort model means that students will progress through the program together, fostering deep relationships, shared learning, and accountability. This model reflects the communal nature of spiritual formation and enhances the overall learning experience.
  • Who will be teaching the courses?
    Courses will be taught by experienced faculty with backgrounds in spiritual direction, spiritual formation, and ministry leadership. Instructors will be trained/certified spiritual directors with practical ministry experience.
