Advent’s Third Sunday: A Call to Rejoice

Scripture Reading:

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”

—Philippians 4:4-5

On this third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, the Church invites us to pause and rejoice. Gaudete means “rejoice,” and this day shifts our hearts toward the joy that Christ’s coming brings. As the midpoint of Advent, Gaudete Sunday is a spiritual breath of fresh air. We are reminded that the waiting is not forever—Christ is near, and His arrival is cause.

Why Rejoice in Advent?

Advent is a season of preparation, reflection, and repentance. Yet, Gaudete Sunday reminds us that our preparation is not somber but filled with expectant joy. The joy we celebrate is not a fleeting happiness based on circumstances but a deep confidence in God’s promises.

The prophet Isaiah captured this hope:

“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing.” (Isaiah 35:1-2)

The Source of Joy

Philippians 4:4-5 reminds us to rejoice not because life is easy or perfect but because “the Lord is near.” The nearness of Christ is the foundation of our joy. His presence brings peace in turmoil, hope in despair, and light in darkness.

Preparing our hearts for Christmas, we can reflect on how God has already been near us. His faithfulness in the past strengthens our confidence in His promises for the future.

How Do We Rejoice Today?

1. Cultivate Gratitude

Take time to reflect on God’s blessings in your life. Gratitude fuels joy, especially as we acknowledge His faithfulness.

2. Celebrate Together

Advent is a communal season. Share this joy with others by encouraging someone who may be weary or burdened during this season.

3. Anchor Your Heart in Christ

Rejoicing doesn’t mean ignoring hardships. Instead, it means fixing our hearts on Christ, trusting His presence transforms every circumstance.

Prayer

Father,

On this Gaudete Sunday, we rejoice in the nearness of Your Son. Thank You for the joy that comes through Jesus Christ, who brings hope and light into our world. Help us to prepare our hearts to welcome Him with gladness. May we reflect Your joy to those around us, pointing others to the Savior.

In Jesus Name, amen.
